VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
An interview with ELSIE KENT
By Julia Coleman (a Needham High School senior)
Q: How many years have you been volunteering at the Needham Community Council?
A: I've been here for 10 years.
Q: Why did you start volunteering?
A: I really wanted to do something. A friend of mine invited me to come try it out, and I enjoyed it so much that I've been here ever since.
Q: What do you do when you're here?
A: I sell clothes at the Clothes Closet.
Q: How many hours a week do you work?
A: I work 9-2 every Wednesday, so 5 hours.
Q: What do you do on a typical day working?
A: I sell the clothes.
Q: What is your favorite part of volunteering?
A: Definitely meeting people, and getting to know them. Many of them even become good friends.
Q: What do you get out of working here?
A: I really enjoy meeting and working with everyone. They've really become a family to me.
Q: What is your motivation to stay here and work for so long?
A: I love feeling like I am contributing to the community. It's a good way to fill a day, too.
Q: Do you have anything you want to say about the council?
A: It is one of the best organizations around.
Q: What advice would you have to a new volunteer just starting here?
A: You must have patience. But most of the people are lovely; you just have to extend yourself to others.
